In tissue systems and membrane systems, biochemical reactions are abstracted to evolution rules that specify which and how many objects are consumed and produced. On the other hand, set membrane systems, inspired by reaction systems, represent an approach which is qualitative rather than quantitative. Each of these models assumes that objectsproduced in a computational step cannot be immediately consumed, i.e., in the same step. As a result, instantaneous (or fast) passing of signals between distant parts of a system cannot be modelled in a direct and faithful manner. In this paper, we introduce so-called signal set tissue systems which employ qualitative evolution rules and incorporatea mechanism, inspired by the a/sync transfer of tokens in Petri nets, supporting instant signalling within the system being modelled. We demonstrate the close behavioural match of signal set tissue systems with the new class of Petri nets called signal set nets with localities.
