The military response to the protection of cultural property during conflict has fluctuated over the past. For the last 2,000 years military theorists have argued that allowing the cultural property of your enemy to be destroyed is bad military practice but reality has bee very different. This chapter will review the ups and downs in cultural property protection over the last 150 years and outline where this may develop over the next 10 years.
