Circus Between Worlds was a is fine art practice lead research project, this collaborative participatory arts project explored the unique role that arts and culture can play in generating energy and action in areas undergoing rapid change. Neil Bromwich, School of Arts and Cultures and Zoe Walker Edinburgh University worked with residents from the Gorbals area of Glasgow, along with staff, students and collaborators from Edinburgh University, Glasgow School of Art and Newcastle University at the iconic Caledonia Road Church in Glasgow forming a rich cross-institutional learning environment responding to site. The project was launched as part of the Glasgow International Festival and gained more than 500 visitors. Through the creation of rich and evocative ‘circus’ style environments, performances and workshops, new energy and perspective was given to the possibilities of place, and the potential futures that the area could hold. Public presentations took place at Glasgow International in April 2016 followed by workshops, film screenings and discussion events within Caledonia Rd Church and the adjacent railway arches now a developing and thriving arts environment and studio complex led by the cross-institutional research group Laurieston Arches Research Group, the group originally formed to present the research project The Circus Between World for Glasgow International Festival of Visual 2016.
