Abstract

The main purpose of the study this chapter reports on was to determine teacher education needs of community language teachers in Auckland. In order to do this, postal questionnaires were sent out to community leaders, teachers, parents and students of community language groups in Auckland. Ninety-five questionnaires were returned: 41 community leaders, 15 teachers, 17 students and 22 parents. Half the students but only small numbers of parents and community leaders were born in New Zealand. All the teachers were born overseas. The study therefore covered three generations of immigrants, first, second and third. Roughly half the students were children and the other half, adults. Teacher education for community language teachers is supported by all sectors of minority language communities in Auckland.

Notes: One of the concerns about the teaching of languages in community language schools in NZ (called complementary schools in the UK), is the training of teachers.
