Corrosion growth rates are an invaluable input into pipeline corrosion management strategies as they allow operators to better define and plan future rehabilitation and operating regimes. However, guidance on estimating future corrosion growth rates is limited. Pll have developed inspection run comparison software (runCom) which provides a direct, quantitative comparison of data from successive high resolution in line inspections. The advantage of a RunCom assessment is that the raw inspection data is compared allowing any differences due to tool technologies and analysis methods to be identified and eliminated. Therefore, corrosion growth rates associated with both new sites of corrosion and active corrosion sites in a pipeline can be accurately located and measured. The resulting corrosion growth rates can be utilised to provide a technical basis for determining the future safe and cost effective operating strategy for a pipeline. This paper shows how RunCom has been utilised to allow reliable corrosion growth rates to be determined for external and internal pipeline corrosion.
