This paper discusses the possibility of designing a rail freight service along a HS rail line in a region in China. Specifically we look at the transport of newly manufactured cars by HS rail. An discrete event-based simulation model is developed and implemented using SIMUL8® to study the inclusion of the new freight service proposed along Guangzhou-Wuhan HS railway line. The results of the simulation model suggest that such a service might be possible if the potential future freight trains behaved like the current HS passenger trains running on the line. In addition the inclusion of such a service shall have a positive effect of nearly 20% on the utilization levels of the HS railway line being studied.
