Today, IMCA M140 can be looked on as the industrial standard DP station keeping analysis method. But the capability plots based on it are not accurate enough. Model tests will be the most accurate methods, but costly. Time domain simulations can be used to evaluate DP capability economically and accurately. To do this, hydrodynamic calculations of vessel motions and forces (moments) on them must be done. And a simulation model of a DP system should also be developed, including an observer, a controller, and an allocator. A fully simulation in time-domain can reflect DP performance more accurately and obviously. The performance of propellers and thrusters can be reflected in 6 DOF time domain simulation. Especially for an OSV, out of water effects or ventilation effects can happen easily. They are simulated to improve the analysis of DP station keeping capability.
