One of the most challenging situations facing prosthodontists is the patient who is intolerant of a removable prosthesis It is recognised that the acceptance of dentures in gagging patients will improve with continued and persistent use of the prostheses However, the aetiology is considered to be multifactorial, and it has long been argued that the gag reflex is a ‘classically-conditioned pathological state This can mean that patients present with significant and deeply embedded fear-related components This poster details the treatment of one such patient using a combination of functional analysis, cognitive behavioural therapy and acclimatisationWhilst integration of patient care with a clinical psychologist may be advised, the case demonstrates that this is not always necessary.
