Abstract

© 2016, Editorial Office of Ship Building of China. All right reserved.Prediction and elimination of severe slugging flow in offshore platform riser system are the two issues concerned by marine engineering design companies and related products manufacturers. This paper introduced the occurrence and harm of severe slugging flows in the riser system of offshore platform. An OpenFOAM-based software developed by Newcastle University was introduced for predictions of severe slugging period in subsea pipeline-riser system. The availability and reliability of the software were validated by previous experimental investigations. Using the software, different pipe downward angles and riser heights were found to have noticeable impacts on severe slugging periods. Comparatively, the effects of riser heights were found to be more considerable. Such conclusions provided some useful basis for future pipeline-riser system designs, installation and inspection.
