© 2015 Elsevier Ltd.A series of carboxy-substituted 2-(nitroaryl)benzothiazole derivatives and carboxy-substituted 2-(nitroaryl)benzoxazole derivatives were prepared and evaluated as potential nitroreductase substrates for the purpose of detecting clinically important microorganisms.
