© 2015 IEEE. Wound rotor synchronous generators are widely used for diesel-generating sets (gen-sets) and wind power generation. For the former, they are designed for operation at only one speed and their operating conditions are dictated by the load. The gen-sets are a standard power supply in islanded power systems as a back-up power supply in remote locations [1]-[3]. For the latter, the wind turbine needs the gears to bring the low speed to the machine's synchronous speed whilst power converters are used to control the frequency and voltage for grid connection. In this case, the machine speed is variable.
