Prophylactic antimicrobial treatment, and replacement of immunoglobulin, may prevent some infection, but replacement of the hematopoietic stem cell containing the genetic defect with a healthy stem cell affords the opportunity to replace non-functional cells, or permit development of cellular elements that were blocked by the mutated gene.
