Investigation of helmholtz coils for edge structure using inductive thermography

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is a crucial concern in engineering, which sets out to determine the health of a structure by reading information from an array of sensors that are embedded into the structure and monitored over time. Therefore, advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is essential as a front end of SHM. Inductive thermography, e.g., eddy current pulsed thermography, has been proved to be one of the effective nondestructive approaches to detect cracks in conductive specimens over a relatively large area. However, the defect detection on complex geometric shapes in the structure such as crack on edges remains a challenge. In this paper, Helmholtz coils are investigated for edge structure and they enable the generation of a uniform magnetic field, which benefits crack detectability. Specifically, impacts on the distances between Helmholtz coils, as well as different locations of Helmholtz coils, are studied and this study provides guidelines to enhance edge detectability. This work will aid in the development of detecting complex geometric shapes for the key structural components in SHM.
