© 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. This chapter provides an introduction to the subject of microbial fuel cells. It provides an overview to the various electrochemical principles and biological mechanisms which occur in these MFCs and builds on the known behaviour of the more conventional chemical fuel cells. It provides a brief summary of the materials used in MFCs and their performance characteristics important for their application. It also gives an indication as to which applications they may be applied to and some typical performance characteristics.
