The development of high-performance and cost-effective anodes is an important aspect for practical implementation of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) in wastewater treatment. Over the past decade, various materials have been investigated as MFC anodes. The characteristic of the anode surface is one of the deciding factors for developing a high-performance anode, because the biological reactions mainly occur over its surface. Therefore, many studies have concentrated on improving the characteristics of the anode surface by using different modification strategies. The chapter considers the requirements of the anode for MFCs and discusses the recent advances and perspective in the modification of anode materials, which is the main approach to improve MFC performance. Finally, future perspectives for development of high-performance and cost-effective anodes will be discussed.
