The Smarter Network Storage Project (SNS), led by UK Power Networks, is a project to demonstrate multi-purpose applications of large scale Electrical Energy Storage (EES) in the UK. The SNS facility was installed and ready to support the network within 12 months of commencing construction. However, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) issues were encountered during commissioning which restricted full capacity of 6 MW. A detailed investigation involving measurements, modelling and analysis has been carried out on the SNS facility. An unforeseen resonance resulting from a combination of the sheer scale of the facility, the topology of the Power Conversion System (PCS) and the characteristics of the battery arrays were identified as the main issue. PSCAD and Matlab models of the EES have been developed to investigate the source of the problem and to validate potential solutions prior to implementation of a successful resolution involving the addition of interposing transformers. It is hoped the lessons learned will provide valuable technical insight and highlight some of the challenges of equipment integration for EES projects.
