Natural edge defects characterization of free-form surface structure is challenging for non-destructive testing of metallic materials. This paper investigates an eddy current pulsed thermography (ECPT) technique for edge defects inspection of complex blade structure using Helmholtz-coil excitation. Natural edge defects of a Ti-alloy blade sample are inspected using ECPT and identified by thermal patterns. A thermo-opticalflow (TOF) approach is proposed for thermal transient responses analysis and features extraction to obtain geometry information of natural edge defects as well as microdefects. Experimental studies are implemented for verification of the proposed method following with comparison studies. Results show that micro-defects in early stages and accurate natural edge defects profiles can be identified based on TOF features. Future works including multi-physics based defect quantitative evaluation are discussed.
