Families, family relationships, the practices of families and the nature of social support in a changing world are a consequence of population ageing, economic development, urbanisation and globalisation. The nature and rate of change in family life and social support as experienced by older people is extremely diverse, not only between different regions of the world but also within different countries, cultures and socio-economic groups. This chapter reviews the impact of our changing world on the family lives of older people and the provision of social support. It examines the opportunities and challenges for the individual and society by highlighting the continued significance of family solidarity in later life and the provision of social support throughout the world.
