Abstract

Following a brief reminder of UNESCO’s instruments that promote “heritage and creativity” as cornerstones for future sustainable “vibrant, innovative and prosperous knowledge societies”, this paper outlines the considered pillars and characteristics of the ‘ecomuseum ideal’. It explores if these are useful for small museums wishing to promote community involvement and sustainability in integrated heritage management for the future. The illustration of the ‘turtle’ will be used to symbolize the importance of viewing the management of intangible and tangible heritage ‘holistically’. The paper includes some personal reflections on the work being undertaking on Jeju Island to promote haenyeo heritage and culture.
