Abstract

The chapter presents the spatial configuration of Evelyn's villa through an analysis of two manuscripts. The first is a famous annotated plan drawing that Evelyn made of the villa and its gardens in c. 1652, the second is a household management tract that he prepared for his bride shortly after their wedding, the 'Instructions OEconomique'. The principal theme is the way in which the metpohor of microcosm is played out in the two representaitons.
