Abstract

This paper briefly describes the work being undertaken to evaluate the possibility of understanding and then improving the performance of ‘short’ neutral sections in AC railway electrification. Mathematical models of a neutral section are constructed using their physical characteristics, and the performance against models of real UK pantographs is simulated using an adaptation of proprietary multi body dynamics software. Findings will be validated against real line test data. Using the results, the sensitivity of the neutral section performance to particular parameters of its construction can be examined for optimisation, and improvements proposed.
