Abstract

The dynamic characteristics of ashallow-draft spar-type floating wind turbine (FWT)system are investigated using the numerical code FAST. This FWT system is designed for harvesting wind power in a water depth of 150 m where the cost of energy is believed to be reasonable. A comparison between this FWT system and OC3-Hywind system in terms of their dynamic responses is presented firstly. The influence of wind especially turbulence on the dynamics of FWT system is then investigated. Finally, a comprehensive load-case analysis is performedfor this FWT system. It is found that turbulence brings significant excitations around the natural frequencies of FWT system. Surge and pitch are dominated by rotor thrust. They are believed to couple with each other through the relationship between rotorthrust and relative wind velocity. And yaw is mainly determined by the yaw moment induced by rotor thrust when the platform is rolling.
