Recently, even epithelial tumors have been recognized to arise from different tissues and have a different genetic make up. This has implications for future therapies but currently epithelial ovarian cancer is treated with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Advances in these therapies have led to modest improvements in median survival, but this has not translated into improved cure rates. There is continued interest in developing screening programs for both sporadic and familial cases.
