Abstract

© 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. The American Revolution was the first of the Atlantic Revolutions. Having attained a status of advanced development, the American colonies were not prepared to tolerate the imposition of taxes and tighter controls which the mother country desired to impose on them. Ill-judged policies met resistance which escalated and resulted in war. Aided by the French, the Spanish and the Dutch, the Americans won a famous victory. Most innovative was the creation of a republican government, constructed over a period of three months in the summer of 1787.
