The primary objective of this study was to identify and compare the contributing factors to the usage of ride-sourcing and regular taxi services in urban areas, with high-resolution GPS dataset provided by ride-sourcing and taxi companies. Data were collected at 167 ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTA) in New York City in the United States. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) models were developed to establish a relationship between the ride-sourcing and regular taxi trips in a ZCTA and various contributing factors. The results of comparative analyses suggest that the spatiotemporal patterns of the ride-sourcing and taxi trips are quite different, and the variability in the spatiotemporal patterns of the ride-sourcing trips is generally greater than that of the regular taxi trips. GWR models were developed to establish a relationship between the ride-sourcing and regular taxi trips in a ZCTA and various contributing factors. The results suggest that the contributing factors to the ride-sourcing trips are different from those to the regular taxi trips. More specifically, the ride-sourcing services were mainly carted to young people, while the regular taxi services were more likely to be accepted by middle-aged people. In addition, the number of parking spaces and the workers commuting by carpooling in a ZCTA were positively correlated with the ride-sourcing trips, while their impacts were insignificant for the regular taxi trips. The impacts of subway accessibility on the usage of both the ride-sourcing and the regular taxi trips were statistically significant, but the magnitudes of the impacts may vary greatly across different ZCTAs. The findings of the study could provide instructive guidance and suggestions for traffic management authorities to develop strategies and regulations that aim at improving the operations of ride-sourcing and taxi services.
