This submission reports on the findings of a social research study into the realities of flexible working, that is, the ability of staff to work outside of fixed office and outside of traditional 9-5 working hours. Such arrangements are particularly popular with working parents and carers as well as with cost-conscious businesses but can also have wider societal benefits. This submission consists of three main parts. Firstly, the benefits of flexible working as established by prior research are summarized. Secondly, the challenges of flexible working as identified in this research are discussed. Thirdly, recommendations to the National Policy Forum are made to inform the consultation on the key labour market challenges of the future.
