Abstract

Fields is a spatialised sound performance using web-based software running on the mobile devices of audience members. Fields is both a software system that enables a range of sonic diffusions to occur within a new sound composition, unique to each performance. The work uses the audience’s personal mobile devices as a collective array of speakers. These are controlled live by the centralized performer (Tim Shaw). Fields was made in collaboration with web developer and audio engineer Sébastian Piquemal, a specialist in web audio, who wrote the software system while Tim Shaw conceptualized the programme and performs it with participation from the audience. The work offers an alternative form of audience participation within sound-art performance. Fields not only offers a new approach to sound diffusion using software application design. This project and the accompanying paper, show how the artwork opens a new paradigm for spatialised audio and new media performance. The paper describes the technical and aesthetic observations about performing and composing with the system.
