On Extending the Overloading Capability of Modular Multilevel Converter

This paper extends the overloading capability of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) by incorporating additional controller in the inner current loop for modulating the limits of the output current as a function of junction temperature of the power semiconductor switches. The entire system including the control blocks is simulated in Simulink environment of MATLAB. Simulation results show that the MMC can sustain long term overload when operated within the scope of its electrical and thermal operating regions and can also provide additional short term overload when operated at the margins of these regions.
