Abstract

The report presents a new insight into the nature of the shipbuilding market, which is argued to be composed of trade in capacity, which is inherently flexible in accommodating a mix of different shipbuilding products (the product mix). This is significant in the determination of price within the market, including cross price elasticity between products competing for the same capacity. The nature of shipbuilding cycles is also discussed, being at the root of competitive and economic difficulties in the industry, with long term analysis of output presented for the first time. The report also provides information on revised methods for market forecasting that address problems that have led to shipbuilding forecasting being notoriously unreliable in the past.
