On September 12, 2011, a Directive that had been years in the making was finally approved by the Council of Ministers. Somewhat contentious in nature, the Directive had been on hiatus since 2008, as the Council of Ministers was so divided over the subject that a vote in favour of the Directive was unlikely to succeed. However, in February 2011, the Danish Government apparently had a change of heart, and announced its support of the proposed Directive.1 With Portugal and Finland also expressing their intention to support the proposal, a new vote on a Directive extending the term of protection over sound recordings (the Sound Recordings Directive)2 from 50 years to 70 years was held on September 8, and the Directive adopted by qualified majority.
