This essay challenges the integration of Walser into the aesthetic pantheon of high modernism through a close reading of "The Walk". It argues that Walser's poetics is not only a metareflection on writing and artistic production, but also a powerful way of engaging with social and natural environments. Walser's short prose often dramatizes the intricacies of human perception und thus complicates received concepts of the subject-object relation. It should therefore be read as a phenomenological enterprise that speaks particularly powerful to us today in times of a global environmental crisis.
