Llechi A Llafur // Slate or State is a fine art practice led research project that took place in the context of Penrhyn Castle, a National Trust site in North Wales as part of the wider Trust New Art Programme. The program places contemporary art in National Trust Properties with an aim of connecting people to places. Penrhyn Castle is the site of the longest strike in British industrial history, The Great Strike of Penrhyn Quarry 1900-03. Currently this history is not told in the Castle, a controversial hidden history the impact of which is evident in the rift between the castle and the local community. Within this context Slate or State employs fine art practice led research to interrogate the question: Can fine art practice become an active agent in negotiating contested and hidden histories within a historic site in order to bring into publicly view alternative narratives to the dominant histories currently told? The project employed participatory multimedia fine art practice as a methodology to interrogate this question. The research builds on existing presidents within this field of research such as Jeremy Deller’s ‘Battle of Orgreave’ (2001) discussed by Claire Bishop (2012) Artificial HellsStale or State is original in its methodology that engages participation of the local community of the ex-quarrying town of Bethesda, the town central to the Great Strike, as participants and co-creators of the work which was then displayed for public view back in the site of the conflict, the castle. The Trust New Art Programme, stands as the main commissioning body for contemporary art in historic site’s in the UK. The significance of this research project lies within the importance of this work in it's influence on commissioning policy’s for contemporary art in historic sites as a model of best practice
