Abstract

The article compares four surveys of young people's reading habits conducted in Australia, Denmark, England and Ireland between 2000 - 2002, identifying key similarities and differences. It presents evidence to show that on entering the education system most young people value reading and aspire to master longer and more difficult books, but that in tandem with the move to promote independent reading, interest in reading declines in all four countries. After comparing strategies for choosing and reading books, notciable differences between the sexes are identified and suggestions for sustaining interest and increasing pleasure in reading across the age ranges are suggested.
