© 2015 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA. The first manganese compound featuring a Mn-Mn bond, dimanganese decacarbonyl [Mn2(CO)10], was synthesized and first structurally characterized in the 1950s. Since then, the realm of Mn-Mn bonding species has significantly expanded. This chapter focuses on representative advancements of homobimetallic complexes with Mn-Mn bonds published after 2000, while important historical aspects are included as well. Technetium bears a close electronic relationship to rhenium, and therefore the occurrence of similar compounds may be anticipated. One of the landmark achievements of modern inorganic chemistry was the isolation and characterization of transition metal complexes that contain multiple metal-metal bonds. One particularly noteworthy milestone near the dawn of the field was the synthesis and structural characterization of salts containing the octachlorodirhenate(III) anion, Re2Cl8 2-. The synthesis of a related n-butylammonium salt, (TBA)2Re2Cl8, was first achieved via the hypophosphorous acid (H3PO2) reduction of ReO4 - in aqueous hydrochloric acid.
