Abstract

iCon (2019) For solo performer, two turntables and looper station. Written and performed by Mariam Rezaei. The Sword-Billed Hummingbird, a nectarivore, has co-evolved with the Plassiflora Mixta flower. Who should be with Layla? Someone who can be Majnun. The man holding up this flag actually belongs to the other side. A technology sector whose profits are driven by planned obsolescence. Twenty percent of e-waste is recycled. Recycling should not be used as a balm. A love story between plant and animal; an elegy of state. The existence of the animal arose from the death of the plant. The forest teaches us that cooperation is vital. A third general election in five years looms large. 14 deaths result in 150 workers striking for better working conditions. Technology dehumanises and destroys lives to tell a parallel tale of prosperity, opportunity, filters and likes. Hummingbirds can see near-ultraviolet light. Before now, I wanted to be paid for what I said but now, I need you to buy me for my words.

Notes: For solo performer, two turntables and looper station. A love story between plant and animal; an elegy of state. Magic is hidden in plain sight while we stare into an infinite prism of the self. The politics of the wild tell us error propagation is vital to survival. Recycling should not be used as a balm.
