This text provides a foundationin applied control to helpbridge the gap between controltheory and its real-worldapplications. Working frombasic principles, the bookdelves into control systemsdesign through the practicalexamples of the ALSTOM gasifiersystem in power stationsand underwater robotic vehicles in the marine industry. It also shows how software such as Matlab and Simulinkcan aid in control systems design. Emphasizing keyaspects of the design process, the book covers thedynamic modeling, control structure design, controllerdesign, implementation, and testing of control systems. The book begins with the essential ideas of appliedcontrol engineering and an introduction to Matlab andSimulink. The book then discusses the analysis, modelorderreduction, and controller design for a power plantand the modeling, simulation, and control of a remotelyoperated vehicle (ROV) for pipeline tracking. The bookthen explains how to obtain the ROV model and verifythe model by using computational fluid dynamics softwarebefore designing and implementing the controlsystem. In addition, it details the nonlinear subsystemmodeling and linearization of the ROV at vertical planeequilibrium points. This book will be of interest to individualswho want a better understanding of the theoryand practice of basic control systems design, analysis, and implementation.
