Abstract

This study investigates how Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in UK’s grocery-retail industry cope with disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In the grocery retailer industry the major of businesses are fragmented SMEs. They are increasingly under pressure to compete with bigger grocery retailers. Twenty-seven interviews were conducted with SMEs in England. The research findings reveal that SMEs had no preparation for the disruption and response them reactively. This study recommends that SMEs need clearer avenues of communication with the government and better resources for learning and training, and need to improve supply chain collaboration.
