Photo-NHC catalysis is introduced as a strategy for engaging hitherto unsuitable carbonyl substrates at the carboxylic acid oxidation level in photochemical transformations of aldehydes and ketones. This approach enables an NHC-catalyzed photoenolization/Diels–Alder (PEDA) reaction of acid fluorides to isochroman-1-ones. The NHC likely acts as a “transient aryl group” that temporarily changes the photochemical properties of the carbonyl substrate.
