Validation of novel active wheelset steering system through numerical simulation

Abstract

The paper describes vehicle dynamics simulations work that was carried out to support the design, and validate an innovative active suspension system. The purpose of the active system is to improve curving performance of rail vehicles through radius steering depending on track curvature. It was designed as a simple and robust system, suitable for implementation in new bogies, as well as retrofitting existing ones. In the simulation study, a model of the active steering system including position control algorithm was incorporated into the model of a conventional bogie of a British coach. This enabled a demonstration of the benefits of the steering system by a comparison of simulation outputs: efficiency in reducing the angle of attack and T-gamma indicator, as well as other quantities that characterise vehicle performance in curves. British track access charges calculation procedure was used to determine the direct financial benefit for an operator that would implement the active system – it was found that the active system almost completely eliminates the surface damage component of the infrastructure usage charges. No negative influences on running stability were observed. At this stage, the steering system has been validated through simulations and its development continues towards manufacturing and field testing of a prototype.
