I composed Turned Away in memory of those who died in the Doolough Tragedy in 1849, part of An Gorta Mór, The Great Irish Famine. It was commissioned by Afri (Action from Ireland) to mark the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, marking the names of those who died. The footsteps at the start of the piece are there to remind us of those people who died of poverty and starvation, and who continue to do so today, in our world of plenty.
