Zazzo here performs the world premiere of Die Tode des Orpheus (The Deaths of Orpheus), a 30-minute long concert piece for solo countertenor and symphonic orchestra, in collaboration with composer Rolf Riehm, conductor Jonathan Stockhammer, and the Radio Symphony Saarbrucken. Composer, singer, and orchestra explore extremes leaps in tessitura and voice registers using fragmented texts and syllables to portray the violence and theatricality, or 'masking' inherent in the polyvalent Orpheus myth, and in so doing questioning the effectiveness--or even possibility--of narrative unity.
