Towards biocompatible pulsatile materials

Pharmaceutical formulations able to release active ingredients rhythmically in predefined steps, over longer periods of time, are of interest for enabling truly personalised hands-free pharmacotherapy. Such formulations can be achieved by coupling smart materials, able to respond to the external stimuli, and oscillatory chemical reactions, as a source of the stimuli. We have recently formulated pulsatile materials [1] by chemically coupling oscillatory Bruk Temkin Gorodsky Novakovic (BTGN) reaction [2] and chitosan based hydrogels [3]. We now present progress with BTGN reaction employing polymeric substrates and polymeric catalysts, which are the core constituents of the pulsatile material. Aiming for medical applications, we also report biocompatibility and biodegradation of polymeric backbone.
