Abstract

With funding from the Scottish Government, this research studied rural movements in ten countries in Europe to learn lessons and inform the development of a rural movement in Scotland. The research identifies six overarching themes with learning points for Scotland. These themes are: structure, collaboration, purpose, activities, relationship with government, and place-based action. The research demonstrates how rural movements represent an organised and effective approach to developing a network and voice for rural citizens and those working to support rural development. A number of conclusions are drawn and recommendations made for developing and supporting a Scottish approach.
