Abstract

In this document, I have prepared 10 stories of recent instances (2019-now) which I would like to share, where my research team, working alongside with international collaborators, have undertaken, i.e. research and innovation projects that align with the UNSDGs. These projects focus on how materials technology is applied to develop (in some instances, these address structural monitoring & repair) sustainable materials for applications in several areas, namely buildings, transport, energy, water, carbon capture and food. These initiatives aim to address the pressing challenges posed by the climate crisis and contribute to safeguarding both humanity and our environment. More important, these projects bring together a wealth of expertise across disciplines to unify efforts towards a new way of thinking about materials and production. Collectively, these expertise, embodied in the consortiums of the respective projects, address environment engineering, mechanical and design engineering, civil engineering, water technology, food technology, clinical technology, farming technology, waste/recycling technology etc. This document was submitted (22 June 2023) to Jennie Lester, Research Assistant, School of Natural and Environmental Sciences, who was tasked to synthesise current stories linked to the SDGs, with the intention of creating a report highlighting stand-out stories on the ways in which the university is contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
