The consequences of Brexit for Northern Ireland have been subject to intense debate since the beginnings of the negotiations between the UK and the EU. In many ways the debate over the special arrangements for Northern Ireland in the Brexit deal has become shorthand for the impact of Brexit on the Union as a whole. This issue dwarfs the attention given to the impact of the Internal Market Act on the level of autonomy afforded to Scotland and Wales, or as this article highlights, the particular consequences for Welsh ports of the re-routing of trade flows as a result of Brexit. The neglect of these issues showcases the tensions in the UK’s territorial constitution and how they have been exacerbated by Brexit.
