Abstract

This exhibition presents arts-based research - three 3m x 4m banners - about industrial transitions. The art was made through community participation in Wallsend (UK), Lysekil (Sweden), and Luleå (Sweden). Wallsend was famous for shipbuilding and some citizens want and are searching for a new industrial future. Lysekil was famous for building boat engines, a cannery, and granite mining. Only an oil refinery remains. Some citizens would like a more sustainable future based on the surrounding sea and forest. For over 100 years Luleå has been known as Sweden’s ‘steel city’ . In 2020 a start-up pilot plant for fossil-free sponge iron began. The aim is to decarbonize the industry. Some citizens find hope in this greener steel industry while others feel all the money has gone into steel at the expense of diversifying industry and futures. Discussions of industrial change often privilege industry and government. Yet citizens have opinions that matter also. Is anyone listening? These banners were made by the communities to express what they think about the past, present, and future. In all these communities banner-making has been part of expressing their industrial culture.
