Abstract

Dynamic conductive road charging (DCRC) enables electric vehicles (EVs) with smaller batteries to travel further and eliminates intermittent stops for charging. This paper presents a unique concept of DCRC based on stationary-hub wheel technology, which offsets the wheel drive motor to a non-concentric position, resulting in a static hub that can accommodate the power collection unit (PCU). The PCU can be added or removed like tyres without affecting the car’s integrity. The eccentric wheel drive reduces torque requirements and improves braking efficiency. The paper describes an experimental platform developed to validate this concept, including a prototype active PCU.
