Abstract

Adaptations in Human Landscapes Along the Nile is a multidisciplinary landscape research project focused on how people in the Dongola Reach developed responsive land use strategies following the African Humid Period. Our goals include gaining a better understanding of the age and purpose of various features having potential agricultural, hydrological or transport use, and identifying their connections to settlement, societal and environmental change. In November of 2022, we undertook an initial field season to test a new dating methodology, OSL-PD, that is suitable for such features. Targets for this testing were linear features and mound fields at sites first identified during field surveys in the 1990’s. The results presented here represent the first use of OSL-PD to better understand the age, duration of use, and societal implications of such landscape features in the Dongola Reach and provide a useful foundation for further investigations.
