Abstract

The Encyclopedia of Art and Cultural Heritage Law is a multi-volume encyclopedia reviewing cultural heritage law. This chapter is one of some 70 country reports, reviewing the ratification and implementation of cultural heritage law in the United Kingdom. As well as setting out the basic principles of the national legal system, and a brief history of UK heritage law, the chapter reviews the protection of immovable, movable and intangible heritage during peace and armed conflict, covering national law and the national implementation of international cultural heritage treaties including the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict; the 1972 World Heritage Convention and the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property, amongst others. Each section of the United Kingdom review is written by an expert with legal expertise and practical experience of the implementation of that aspect of UK law.
