Abstract

This paper looks at the historiography of attempts to extract economic information from ceramics. Theoretical problems involved in model-building exercises and arguments from proxy evidence are highlighted. Recent volumes of Britannia and Journal of Roman Archaeology are then examined to explore the range of current interpretations. The paper concludes with some suggestions for the future.
